Our Second Annual Opening Day and Mardi Gras Celebration on February 24th saw wildly decorated boats enter Bridgewater Channel to salute our Commodore Scott Monnier at the London Bridge. The procession was led by the Club's houseboat with Grand Marshall Buster Johnson and a group of Special Olympians aboard. The festivities continued that evening at the Nautical Inn where an elaborate dinner-dance was held, complete with live Cajun music by musician Steve Hill. A live auction, silent auction and other fund-raising activities were conducted that evening to raise funds for Lake Havasu City Special Olympics. For this special occasion, Commodore Scott Monnier, Past Commodores Mary King, Tammy Kastelz, Charles Coulbourn and Frank Kastelz of the London Bridge Yacht Club were joined by visiting Past Commodores Joyce Sheridan, Evans Hughes and Clark Owens of Channel Islands Yacht Club, Richard Lewis of Corsair Yacht Club and Tom Kennedy of both Windjammers Yacht Club and the Southern California Yachting Association to participate in the Boat Parade and festivities of the evening. A panel of Special Olympians and Past Commodores judged the boat entries and awarded First, Second and Third Place prizes to the best decorated boats in the parade. In a separate ceremony held March 10th at Thunderbolt Middle School during a Special Olympics competition, the Yacht Club presented a check for $9,350 to Chris Bergen, Lake Havasu City Special Olympics Coordinator.
