Working towards a goal
A major goal of the London Bridge Yacht Club is to
acquire a clubhouse on the shoreline of Lake Havasu. A short-term goal,
which had been discussed from the very beginning of the Club, was to acquire a
"suitable facility" to use as a clubhouse until a permanent facility
was possible.
During the Summer of
2006 just such an opportunity presented itself when we learned of a used
houseboat that was going to be for sale. So we made a trip downriver to inspect
the boat. Most members did not take to the "mauve" interior, although
a few were heard admiring it. Nevertheless, we concluded that with a little
vision and planning (and a lot of hard work), we could convert the once-majestic
houseboat to serve our purposes. Skeptical of the mechanical condition of the
boat, we had it towed upriver to Lake Havasu, and hauled out for the conversion
process.
After more than 3 months of
work by club members, we launched the converted houseboat in late October, 2006 and drove it through
Bridgewater Channel to its new home at the end of Pier-P in the Lake Havasu
Marina. There is serves as our Clubhouse and base of operations throughout the
year. We will use it for the Boat Parade of Lights as well as our own
Commodore's Opening Day and Mardi Gras Boat Parade. It will also be seen
frequently out on the water as Club members use it for a variety of outings and
events.
The following pictures show a
brief pictorial of the conversion process:
